The Columbus Cottonmouths completed a series sweep of the Louisiana Ice Gators Thursday night with a 3-2 win in overtime. The Snakes won the best-of-three series 2-0 and advance to the SPHL semi-finals. Game dates and opponents for the second round of the playoffs will be determined by Monday, April 2.
The Snakes built a 2-0 lead heading into the final period of play with a pair of goals by John Sullivan, one in the first and one in the second. Facing elimination, the Ice Gators came out in the third period, cutting their deficit in half at 3:17 with a goal from Tyler Lyon. The Ice Gators tied it up just over two minutes later as the game would go into sudden death overtime.
Sam Bowles buried the game-winner at 9:53 of the overtime period, advancing the Snakes to the SPHL semi-finals and ending the Ice Gators' season.
Ian Vigier stopped 38 of 40 shots in the victory. The Snakes will face either the Pensacola Ice Flyers, Mississippi Surge, Knoxville Ice Bears or Huntsville Havoc in second round action. Dates will be announced as soon as possible after the conclusion of other first round series.
