NewsSnakes Defeat Surge in ShootoutDate: Nov 30, 2009 The Columbus Cottonmouths defeated the Mississippi Surge 5-4 in a shootout Saturday night. Tyler Johnson and Nic Boucher gave the Snakes a 2-0 first period lead. Tim Hockley gave the Snakes a 3-0 lead in the second period and Tim Green put the Snakes up 4-0 at 7:21 of the third period. At 13:39 of the third period, the Surge mounted a comeback that featured four goals in a span of 5:21, sending the game into overtime. The Snakes received a five-on-three powerplay for the first minute of overtime for two delayed penalties at the end of regulation, but they failed to capitalize. In the shootout, Sam Bowles led the Snakes off with a goal past former Snakes goaltender Ryan Senft. Orrin Hergott got the winning goal as Ian Vigier stopped four of five shots from Mississippi in the shootout, and 48 of 52 shots in the game. The Snakes improve to 7-6 on the season and are currently tied for third place, just two points out of first. They head to Fayetteville Friday to take on the FireAntz and return to the Snake Pit Dec. 11 and 12 for a pair of games against the Knoxville Ice Bears.
